So recently I discovered that you can easily fit wine into a low-carb/Keto diet! I just generally assumed that because wine is made from fermented fruit it would be oozing with carbohydrates.
Mostly, I really miss cooking with wine. You have to admit, a nice wine braised beef is fantastic! Moderation is the key, I’m not telling you to drink a whole bottle, but a glass on special occasions will definitely fit into a low carb diet!
These numbers are based on 5 oz servings.
*Red wines to enjoy:
- Merlot: 3.7 carbs
- Pinot Noir: 3.4 carbs
- Cabernet Sauvignon: 3.8 carbs
- Burgundy: 5.46 carbs
- Shiraz/Syrah: 3.79 carbs
*White wines to enjoy:
- Chardonnay: 3.7 carbs
- Pinot Gris/Grigio: 3.2 carbs
- Riesling: 5.5 carbs
- Champagne/Sparking whites: 1.5 carbs
- Sauvignon Blanc: 3 carbs
Glühwein is the name for mulled wines in German-speaking countries. You can get this citrusy warm beverage in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and few other German-speaking areas. Glühwein is exceptionally popular during the Christmas holidays and is commonly served in outdoor Christmas markets along with a variety of other holiday foods and hand-made crafts.
These Christmas markets have tents that have been set up for so people can sit down and get warm while sipping hot mulled wine or beer as a break from Christmas shopping. For Germans, Glühwein is an integral part of the Christmas experience.

Keto Mulled Wine
- 1 orange
- 5 whole cloves
- 3 whole star anise pods
- 1 piece (1 inch) peeled fresh ginger, thinly sliced
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 cup water
- 3/4 cup of Swerve (or your favorite Keto sugar replacement)
- 1 bottle (750 mL) red or white wine (cheap wines are ok, but it has to be a wine you would drink by the glass normally. So no box or cooking wines!)
- Peel orange in strips using a vegetable peeler, being careful not to remove any pith (the white part). Push cloves into peel.
- Combine clove-studded orange peel, the star anise, cinnamon, ginger, water, and Swerve in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally, and cook for 10 minutes. Remove from heat, and add wine. Let stand for 20 minutes to mull.
- Just before serving, gently reheat mulled wine over medium heat until just beginning to simmer. Do not boil!
- Serve warm.
