So I just received an amazing box of goodies from the fine folks over at Epic Bar. These guys make paleo//gluten-free//low glycemic//soy free//dairy free//nitrate free snacks. I am a big fan of jerky, but not all the preservatives and refined sugar that come along with them–and the really soft ones are always full of crap.
If you can imagine jerky and lara bars having a baby, it would be these guys. I am totally hooked! It’s like jerky, but amazingly soft with chunks of nuts and fruit and seasoned beautifully!
Not to mention they have a military discount! So for my fellow military families, just use the coupon code EPICPATRIOT10 to get a nice little discount! I got this message from them as well…
“We at EPIC appreciate everything our service men and women do for this country, and we know just how important it is not only to acknowledge that, but prove it as well. That is why we honor those that serve with our military discount that never expires.”
For athletes, grass-fed meat is particularly favorable in that it contains up to twice the levels of conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, which promotes the development of lean muscle tissue and lowers the risk for a myriad of other health problems.
Not only do humanely-treated grass-fed animals live better, more natural lives but they place less stress on the land they inhabit. Epic Bar animals live on beautiful lands. When properly managed, grass-fed animals can produce a net benefit to the environment. Pasture grazing requires significantly less fossil fuel than a feedlot diet consisting of corn, soy, antibiotics, and hormones. Pastured animals fertilize the land they graze on, which eliminates the fossil fuels required by conventional fertilizing practices. Lastly, grass-filled fields not only hold on to topsoil and moisture but also more effectively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than any other use of land!
Epic Bar sets the industry standards by sourcing their meats from ranchers that they deem EPIC. They mandate proof of certifications, which validate that their animals receive the utmost humane treatment. They believe that animals should always live pasture-centered lives where turkeys forage, pigs wallow, and buffalo roam. This is the way nature intended animals to be and they see themselves as leaders in recognizing the value of sustainable and responsible animal welfare practices.
So the first bar is a Bison, Uncured Bacon + Cranberry Bar. The bacon is what I taste first, and then the slight tartness of the cranberry. Bison has always had a milder flavor to me, so it’s nice to have the sweet/smokey combo from the pork. These do have a small amount of brown sugar in them from the bacon, but the bar is still only at 9 net carbs.
Next we have the Beef, Habanero + Cherry Bar. These have a true beef-jerky flavor to them. I was a little sad that they weren’t as spicy as I was hoping for but the addiction of walnuts was a fantastic surprise!
Next we have the Turkey, Almond + Cranberry. The first thing I was thinking before I tried this was a boring thanksgiving dinner. These are anything but! The turkey is still incredibly tender and the spice mixture is definitely inspired by Mexican cuisine…Coriander, Cumin, Garlic, Paprika and Onion.
And I saved my favorite for last. Lamb, Currant + Mint Bar. These were bar far the most tender of all the bars with plump bits of current and a lingering lemon flavor. They were like all my favorite aspects of Greek cuisine in a meaty little bar. I am absolutely buying a whole box of these to snack on!
So as a thank you to Epic & my readers I am hosting a Grass-Fed Giveaway. The prize is 12 Epic Bars (your choice of one flavor) and a collection of buttons & stickers from Epic!
Or, if you don’t feel like waiting just head over to the Epic Store to buy some for yourself!
